Hearing loss is such a gradual, slow, imperceptible decline that most people do not realize it is occurring. Because of the slow change, many people start blaming others for their difficulty understanding. They claim others are not speaking clearly or are mumbling. The hearing impaired believe that they would understand if people just spoke loudly enough. When someone does speak louder, it may be too loud for the hearing impaired person. The response is, "You don’t have to shout at me, you just need to speak clearly to me." When this occurs, the normal hearing person often gets angry and stops the communication process. This causes the hearing impaired person to get angry as well, and to blame others. Psychological Problems Associated with Hearing Aids Some people associate hearing aids with aging and wish to put off becoming old. Obtaining a hearing aid can be a type of passage into becoming old. It ‘s like being told that you need bifocal lenses. This definitely hurts your feelings, especially when someone says, "Oh, your hearing loss is due to aging." We cannot change our age or stop time, but we can improve our hearing.
